Help define what “Data Steward” means for the whole sector
Help us define what “Data Steward” means for the whole sector.
As the volume and complexity of research data keeps growing, so does the essential work of data stewardship, but the role itself is not fully understood. Librarians, research managers, technicians and researchers all routinely do data stewardship work, often as an unrecognised part of a much bigger job. There is currently no shared definition of the “Data Steward” role, and no agreed picture of the skills it involves.
CaSDaR is setting out to change that, and needs people doing this work, in whatever form, to help get it right.
- Estimated time to complete: 15 - 20 minutes
- Who should take part: anyone for whom data stewardship is part of their job, whatever their job title

Why your input matters
Two of CaSDaR’s key deliverables are a clear definition of the Data Steward role and a skills and training framework to support it, and neither can be done without hearing directly from the people actually doing this work. The survey asks about your role and the skills it involves, and your answers will directly shape:
- how the sector defines and recognises this work
- the skills framework used to train and support future data stewards
- the case for better career pathways and recognition for people doing this work now
The more people who take part, the more accurately the final framework will reflect the reality of the work, so a few minutes of your time will genuinely make a difference to how this role is understood and valued going forward.
