In April 2026, 38 members of the global open science community from 8 countries gathered at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Wales for a five-day, participant-led retreat. Part unconference, part hackathon, part activist networking event, the days blended participant-chosen topic groups, a hackathon on open research across disciplines, lightning talks, and hikes through wind turbines and Welsh hills. The result: 10+ published outputs, stipend-supported participation — including greener travel options — for attendees who could not otherwise have joined, and strengthened international collaborations, leaving a community re-energised and better connected to continue pushing for research reform in their own corners of the world — with the retreat itself set to continue at OSR27DE in Germany in 2027.
