Vienna, Austria, 4-9 April 2027

At EGU27, the annual assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), the largest annual gathering of all geoscience domains in Europe, we are convening the Geoscience & Society session “Better software, better research? The role of research software engineering in enhancing open science across disciplines” (session 61595), convened by Jack Atkinson, Hui Ling Wong, Sarah Alidoost and Kirsty Pringle.

Software is central to modern geoscience and enables sharing and reproducing research, but this takes not only researchers but also research software engineers and data stewards. We want to hear:

  • stories of collaboration between researchers and RSEs, both successes and failures, with lessons learned
  • examples of cross-cutting software and workflows, and reuse enabling new science
  • contributions linking open software to open data, reproducibility and FAIR principles
  • perspectives on software policy: funding, team structures, career recognition, green computing, generative AI, institutional change

Abstract submission is open until Tuesday, 12 January 2027, 13:00 CET. All career stages welcome, and early career submissions are particularly encouraged.

Read the full call for abstracts on our blog and submit via the session page.
